How to Buy API 7-1 Drill Collars from China
July 18, 2026 · Core Steel Works
China supplies a large share of the world’s rotary drill stem elements, and drill collars are one of the most standardized items you can buy: API Spec 7-1 defines the material properties, dimensions and marking, and API Spec 7-2 defines the threads. That standardization is your protection — if you specify and verify against the spec, origin matters far less than discipline.
What API Spec 7-1 actually guarantees
API 7-1 covers rotary drill stem elements: drill collars, kellys, subs and stabilizer bodies. For a drill collar it fixes the steel property class (typically AISI 4145H Mod at 285–341 HB, ≥ 40 ft·lb Charpy), dimensional tolerances, and marking. Threads are gauged separately per API 7-2. A supplier holding the API monogram license for 7-1 has passed an audit of exactly these controls.
Qualifying the manufacturer
Ask for three things before talking price:
- API certificate scope — the monogram license must list Spec 7-1, and the legal entity on it must match your contract counterparty.
- A sample documentation package from a previous export order: MTC EN 10204 3.1, full-length UT chart, thread gauge report, hardness records.
- Process evidence — heat treatment furnace charts and thread-cutting / gauging capability. A trading company reselling collars cannot show these; an export partner working with the actual mill can.
What to put in the RFQ
- OD × ID × length, and quantity per size
- Slick or spiral body; elevator/slip recess if needed
- Connection type and size (e.g. NC50 box × pin), stress-relief features
- Hardbanding spec if required
- Required certificates: API monogram, MTC 3.1, UT, thread gauging
- Delivery port and target date
With this list a qualified supplier can quote in about two working days. Missing any of it adds a clarification round-trip — usually a week.
Inspection before shipment
For first orders, budget a third-party inspection (SGS/BV/TÜV or your own engineer): witness UT on a sample, verify hardness readings, check thread gauges against the report, and confirm marking. On repeat orders most buyers drop to document review only.
